Japanese dolls are much more than decorative objects here: they carry stories of childhood, protection, rituals, craftsmanship, and the everyday culture that has evolved throughout Japan’s history. The exhibition “Ningyō: The Art and Beauty of Japanese Dolls” unfolds in four sections — from dolls tied to seasonal festivals and wishes for children’s health, to dolls as works of art and expressions of folk tradition, and finally to contemporary forms that keep this heritage alive today. In the Žad Gallery, visitors encounter a range of techniques, styles, and regional sensibilities, while gaining a vivid sense of how much a single “human form” can reveal about an entire culture.
